Abstract

The partial differential cross-section is derived for the quasielastic scattering of neutrons by liquid water protons undergoing translational diffusion in a heterogeneous system. It is shown that the incoherent scattering law reflects both molecular averaging via statistical mechanics and local volume averaging over the microscopic heterogeneities in the target sample. A model expression for the incoherent scattering law is derived using the macroscopic differential balance laws for mass and linear momentum as applied to liquid water in a porous medium. The model expression can be used to measure the macroscopic water diffusivity parameter.
