Abstract

The scattering of atoms and elementary excitations at the free surface of superfluid4He is studied in the framework of linearized time dependent mean field theory. The probability associated with the evaporation and reflection processes involving phonons, rotons and free atoms is evaluated. The analysis is carried out for different incidence angles. The consistency of the results with general properties of the scattering matrix, such as unitarity and time reversal, is discussed.
