Abstract

The experimental data from coarsening of water-saturated snow are used to derive growth rate as a function of particle size. A similar relationship is derived from a contacting model of coarsening. Both show accelerated shrinkage below 0.7 D ̄ , vanishing growth rate close to D ̄ , and a linear increase in growth rate above 1.5 D ̄ . The model could be greatly improved if more information were available about nearest neighbors in random packings. However, the model is already more realistic for compacts than noncontacting models.
