Abstract
A theoretical analysis is made of the pressure dependence of the optical breakdown threshold of rare gases. It is shown that at high pressures the threshold curves for different radiation frequencies intersect due to the quantum nature of the acquisition of energy by an electron in a laser field. An interpretation is given of the previously unexplained experimental breakdown threshold of argon at the frequencies of neodymium and ruby lasers at high gas pressures.
