Abstract

A statistical mechanical theory of adsorption of gases on solids is developed assuming localized adsorption for the first adlayer and non-localized mobile layer adsorption on top of the first layer. Based upon this model calculations have been made for the adsorption isotherm, the surface pressure and the heat of adsorption. The theory gives satisfactory agreement with available experiments. Semi-empirical estimation of surface area for the adsorbent gives a consistent set of values which is independent of the adsorbate and agrees with that from the Kodera and Onishi method.
