Abstract

A finite relativistic theory of four-fermion interactions is formulated; the theory involves as an essential ingredient the use of an indefinite metric. The problems of interpretation raised by the use of the indefinite metric are analyzed in relation to the observables and structure of many-particle states in quantum field theory; and the consistency of the interpretive postulate is demonstrated. The theory incidentally provides a raison d’etre for the muon.
