Abstract

W E WERE INTERESTED in the comments of Drs. Spaulding and Cooney on the subject of educational art in textbook design, and welcome the opportunity to reply. The most telling point made in either of these critiques is that of Seth Spaulding, who demands some experimental justification of the use of visual art in textbooks, especially to test what types of illustration are best for different purposes and different reader groups. We agree with his call for research on these problems, and would welcome his support in carrying out projects in this area. In terms of our present knowledge, we justify our use and programming of art in books and classrooms as follows:
