Abstract
We present an elementary introduction to the theory of dynamical symmetry breaking in relativistic field theories. After explanation of the effective potential method, two-dimensional models are discussed as examples of dynamical symmetry breaking is renormalized field theories. The essential mechanism causing the dynamical breaking is explained in the review of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The same mechanism is found to be responsible for the dynamical symmetry breaking in asymptotically free field theories like QCD
