Abstract

A statistical-mechanical theory of dilute polymer solutions is developed following the solution theory of McMillan and Mayer, and the osmotic second virial coefficient A 2 is calculated taking account of the intra- and intermolecular interactions. The final expression for A 2 is expressed in terms of the molecular constants such as the molecular weight, segment size and bond length. The molecular weight dependence of A 2 is improved at least in the vicinity of the Flory point in comparison with the theories of Flory-Krigbaum and Isihara-Koyama.
