Abstract

A general discussion of the diffraction patterns of binary condensed systems is given. Three types of binary systems are fully covered by the expressions obtained: in the first the two constituent atoms form the lattice, in the second one constituent forms the lattice and the other is distributed as a molten state, and in the third both constituent atoms have no lattice structure, such as liquid or amorphous systems. Application is made to the diffraction pattern of silver-chalcogenide-type superionic conductors to explain the anisotropic diffuse scattering for the single crystal. The relation between the anharmonic vibrational model for Debye line intensities and the liquid-like model for diffuse scattering is also discussed.
