Abstract
The general set of Maxwell-Bloch equations for multifrequency wave interaction in a three-level system with one- and two-photon resonances is derived. Coherent generation of signal and idler waves by two-photon resonant pumping is investigated. It is shown that the existence of an intermediate level leads to superradiance which strongly affects signal wave generation. Numerical modeling of this process in a long sample of sodium vapor exhibits the possibility of short pulse train generation, while in a cavity by synchronous pumping significant signal pulse compression (more then ten times) is demonstrated.
