Abstract

An atomic system consisting of one electron moving in the field of a positive, Z charged nucleus screened by a negative, (Z-1) charged spherical core, is studied in the particular case of energy eigenvalues just a little lower than the hydrogen ones. An approximation is developed to determine the quantum defects, when the number Z and the potential function inside the core are given. An application is made to the first five alkali atoms, and the contribution of the screen effect to the small quantum defects of these atoms is evaluated.
