In 1970 he called attention to Ethnicity: A Neglected Dimension of American History, and in 1979 he published a survey of The Resurgence of American Immigration History, in which he acknowledged the dramatic increase of books, articles, and dissertations dealing with the roles of race, nationality, and religion in American history (46).1
