Abstract

A two-dimensional linearized model of a continuous optical discharge sustained by a focused CO2 laser beam is used to calculate the position of the discharge boundaries as a function of the laser power, flow velocity, focusing angle, position of the target, and gas pressure. Results of the calculations show reasonable agreement with the experiment.
