Abstract

This work suggests that van der Waals attraction of small colloidal particles to large colloidal particles can establish a cloud of the small particles that tends to shield the larger ones from agglomerating to each other. With consideration of the finite size of the small particles the system is analyzed thermodynamically with interest in stabilizing dispersions of magnetic particles in liquid metallic media.
