Abstract

Molecular orbital calculations show that a water molecule exerts a significant catalytic activity upon the rate of oxirane cleavage by the nucleophile. The trend established upon going from no proton donor, to weakly acidic water, to a fully protonated epoxide clearly establishes the mechanistic effect of additives as proton donors and their effect upon the curing rate of epoxy resins.
