Abstract

The author studies the interaction of hydrogen with a single iron atom or ion when chemisorbed onto a surface. Dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen is a key factor in many surface catalytic reactions. Neutral iron atoms present a barrier to dissociation. A negative iron ion facilitates dissociation of hydrogen.
