Abstract

AbstractResonant tunneling is studied systematically for finite non‐periodic barrier structures with arbitrary potential profiles, which are considered as a network connecting alternately the generalized‐barrier unit with the phase delay unit in series. Analytical expressions of the transmission coefficient and the resonance condition for these structures are derived by taking into account the mass difference between well and barrier layers. It is found that a quasi‐periodic mode may exist in non‐periodic barrier structures. An optimum group of resonant peaks composed of single unity transmission and (n − 2) near‐unity resonant peaks will occur when both the unity resonance condition and the quasi‐periodic mode condition hold simulteneously.
