Abstract

Detailed theoretical investigations are made of elastic scattering and positronium formation in low energy collisions of positrons with hydrogen and helium, using a two channel version of the Kohn variational method with very flexible trial functions and the full non-relativistic Hamiltonian. Well converged results are obtained, enabling the behaviour of the cross sections in the vicinity of the positronium formation threshold to be analysed. The s-wave positronium formation cross sections for both hydrogen and helium are very similar in energy dependence and magnitude, but in both cases this contribution to the total positronium formation cross section is very small.
