Abstract

The author describes two aspects of the research on theoretical psychology in China today. First, research on basic theoretical problems of psychology which include the foundational principles of studying psychology, the nature of psychology itself, the methodology of psychology, the relations between mind and body, and the categories of human psychological activities; second, research on certain western schools of psychology-Wundt's psychology, Freudian theory, neo-behaviourism, humanistic psychology and cognitive psychology. The author then addresses the controversy over the importance of and the necessity for theoretical research among Chinese psychologists, stating that theoretical psychology must be strengthened in China if Chinese psychology is to become robust.
