Abstract

Summary Ability of olfactory system to differentiate a great number of stimuli and, especially, to recognize the needed odour in a mixture of other odours is examined within the scope of statistical theory of communications. Errors probabilities are estimated as functions of the number of components in mixtures and number of “olfactory receivers.” (receptor classes). The theoretical results may give experimental opportunity to evaluate the number of olfactory receivers in man and animals.
