Abstract

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is routinely being used for subsurface investigations including detection of water table and contaminant flow pattern. Past laboratory studies on water table detection in silty soils has shown that GPR actually detects reflection from within the unsaturated capillary (vadose) zone, which is just above the water table. While this phenomenon has been observed from experimental studies, no attempt has been made so far to explain the theoretical basis for the occurrence of GPR reflection within the vadose zone above the water table and not at the level of the actual water table. Understanding this phenomenon from a theoretical stand point requires modeling of GPR reflection from the vadose zone where the moisture content varies with depth.
