Abstract

In this paper, a simple relation between the zero-field splitting D in tetragonal phase and the spin-lattice coupling coefficient G 11 in cubic phase for d n ions in crystals with perovskite structure has been established under the assumption of rigid mx 6 octahedra and constant volume. According to the relation, the linear dependence of zero-field splitting D on the lattice constant ratio c a for tetragonal RbCaF 3:Mn 2+, RbCaF 3:Fe 3+ and TlCdF 3:Fe 3+ crystals has been reasonably explained from the empirical superposition model and the spin-orbit coupling mechanism.
