Abstract
Tuned mass damper has been widely used to absorb the vibration of the external excitation due to its compactness, reliability, efficiency, and low maintenance cost. There are several types of tuned mass damper exist, but the most widely used is the translational tuned mass damper, which includes single tuned mass damper (STMD) and multiple tuned mass damper (MTMD). There were several approaches to study the performance of MTMD. However, there are a lot of high cost experimental research have been done. Regarding cost issue, study of performance using simulation could offer a solution. This research is focused on the effect of MTMD subjected to step and periodic excitation. The performance of MTMD has been analyzed and studied using simulation in terms of decay time, displacement amplitude of main structure, and any other observable phenomena. It has been found that increasing number of MTMD gives reduction of decay time in step and periodic input in series configuration. In addition, it leads to smoother movement response of the system.
