Abstract
An instability connected with strong coherent oscillations of the electron temperature as observed in a PIG discharge is investigated theoretically. The energy equation of the electron gas involving the electronic heat flux as well as certain source terms is linearized. A simple dimensional analysis is used in order to avoid more complicated calculations. The stability criterion obtained in this way is evaluated to give a stability boundary in a certain parameter space. It is also found that the temperature perturbation should move with just the Ex B drift velocity of the electrons. The experimental observations agree surprisingly well with the theoretical predictions despite of the crude approximations involved.
