Abstract
Malta et al. [ J. Phys. Chem. Solids 52, 587 (1991)] have pointed out a sign error in earlier calculations of parameters for intensities of 4 f-4 f electric dipole transitions between crystal-field levels of lanthanide ions [M.F. Reid and F.S. Richardson, J. Chem. Phys. 79, 5735 (1983)]. We show that there is an additional sign error. Once both errors are corrected the conclusions of Reid and Richardson are unchanged, i.e. we obtain opposite relative signs for contributions to the intensity parameters from the ‘static’ crystal field mixing and ‘dynamic’ ligand polarization.
