Abstract

Chapter 3 presents the theoretical framework of the study. It will begin by contextualizing mood in the overall theoretical framework of SFL in Sect. 3.1. In the following sections, it will describe some of the global and local semiotic dimensions of SFL, including the semiotic dimensions of stratification, metafunction, rank scale, and axis. The focus of the book is primarily concerned with the local dimension of axis: it will investigate the cross-linguistic similarities and differences in mood system and mood structure. However, the global dimensions are equally important in the sense that they enable us to take a holistic approach to mood: to consider mood system ‘from above’ by reference to the meaning it realizes and to the tenor parameter of context it resonates with, and ‘from roundabout’ by reference to other systems in the domain of interpersonal meaning. All these dimensions will help us to arrive at a thorough understating of mood.
