Abstract

In this chapter, we outline theoretical contributions from experimental and applied behavior analysis (ABA) to special education research, methods, and practice. First, theoretical foundations of ABA are reviewed, including scientific objectives and use of single-case design methodologies. Next, we describe the influence of ABA on special education research and practice through (a) operant learning theory, (b) function-based approaches to challenging behavior, and (c) data-based decision-making. Last, we describe conclusions and future directions for ABA in special education, including approaches to increasing implementation fidelity, maintenance, generalization, and “buy-in” and illustrate these points with the example of ABA-based School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
