Abstract

α-LFW wear of plasma-sprayed TiO 2 coatings against cast iron was low for both loads below 300 N at 12 kilocycles (kc) and higher loads up to 5 kc. Wear was dependent upon the properties of a thin Fe 2O 3Fe 3O 4 surface film, i.e. adhesive interaction, thickness, deformation and fracture. Wear of cast iron is interpreted in terms of delamination, the formation of prows and loose wear debris. Wear of TiO 2 is explained in terms of the subsurface grain fracture and the formation of a mixed iron oxide surface film.
