Abstract

We theoretically considered fundamentals of so-called “pickup coil” methods for AC loss measurements of superconducting wires and cables from viewpoints of geometrical errors in relation to the sizes of sample and pickup coils and their arrangement. We obtained universal expressions for the geometrical errors in two types of pickup-coil arrangements. One is a coaxial arrangement of main pickup and cancelling coils, and the other is a symmetrical one in an external AC magnetic field. We numerically evaluated the errors in the two types of arrangements and discussed practical configuration of pickup coils for the AC loss measurements with high accuracy.
