Abstract

Equations of state for nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon monoxide are derived and compared to experimental data. It is shown how to separate vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom from translational motion in computing statistical averages. Translational contributions can be computed by treating the molecules as spherical particles moving in a potential field which is averaged over the internal degrees of freedom. Agreement with experimental data is good.
