Abstract

This chapter discusses the possibility of extracting quantum mechanical phase information of an emitter from cold field-emission patterns. It illustrates the theory with coherent cold field emission (CCFE) of graphene. The chapter explains what do we mean by coherent field emission. In principle, coherent interference of emitted electron wave contains information of the geometric structure, the electron energy band, the local atomic orbitals, and dynamic interactions in the emitter. The electronic structure of graphene is associated to the 2p carbon orbitals. The chapter discusses a classical model of two-dimensional emitters, and discusses the calculation of the vacuum potential energy barrier and the non-coherent emission current. It introduces the path-decomposition approach to CCFE.
