Abstract
A theoretical expression is given to calculate the solubility of nitrogen and carbon in liquid iron, cobalt and nickel in terms of the scaled particle theory coupled with a consideration on the characteristics of the interaction between the solutes and metals. The theoretical predictions are shown to agree with experimental observations if a solute atom and the surrounding metal atoms in the nearest neighbor shell are assumed to constitute a hard sphere which is mixed into hard sphere solvent atoms in a uniform potential field.
