Abstract

The theoretical basis of differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) is examined and the conditions for applicability of the method are determined. Support is provided for the more general method of orthogonal optical absorption spectroscopy (OOAS), which can be used to interpret and estimate the effect of a number of previously unexplained sources of error inherent in DOAS.
