Abstract

We study the spin current induced by an inhomogeneous spin-orbit coupling due to impurities by using the Keldysh Green’s function formalism. In particular, we focus on the diffusive contributions and give their analytical expressions. A spin current is found to be generated in the presence of both a gradient in the spin-orbit strength and a gradient in the external electric field. The resulting diffusive spin current indicates the presence of spin-current absorption at the interface between the materials with different spin-orbit coupling strengths, which is exemplified with an experimentally-relevant setup.
