Abstract

Thick rectangular plate, subjected to a highly localized load near the free edge, has been analysed both theoretically and using three-dimensional photoelastic technique. Solution obtained by Reissner's shear deformation theory has been found to be sufficiently accurate and the maximum tensile stress value obtained by this theory agrees closely with that obtained from three-dimensional photoelastic analysis. Due to several assumptions made in the derivation of the governing differential equation, the classical plate theory fails to give accurate results, specially in the neighbourhood of the loaded region. The solutions based on the above three methods have been compared and discussed.
