Abstract

Three approaches to evaluating the statistical error of the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method are compared. First approach is based on the results of the equilibrium statistical mechanics. Asymptotic evaluating the variances is used in the second approach. The last one is based on the central limit theorem for Markov processes. All the studied approaches have their own benefits and disadvantages which are ascertained on the example of a number of characteristic problems of the rarefied gas dynamics with different degree of non-equilibrium.
