Abstract

The cooling effect of field emission from n-type PbTe is theoretically investigated. By considering the outgoing and the incoming electrons in the region of emission, we make the numerical calculation of the energy exchange through the emission and the replacement processes. We find that for n-PbTe, the resultant energy difference leads to a cooling of up to a few of tenths of eV per field electron. This implies that even though the Joule heat is taken into account, the energy exchange is large enough to cool a small electronic device.
