Abstract

ABSTRACTThe main problem encountered in the design of a scanning tunneling microscope is to maintain a precise tip-sample position , which is affected mainly by vibration. This paper describes the design for a vibration isolation system consisting of spring suspension and a stack of several metallic plates ,separated by rubber elements re- spectively. The theoretical analysis and testing research of that is included. In our instruments ,the effect on the vibration isolation of different values of parameters such as the number of stacks (N) and the mass(M)is anal-ysed,the good results of antivibration are obtained. 1. INTRODUCTIONThe scanning tunneling microscope(STM) as introduced by G. Binnig et al1,is a great tool for surface sci-ence as it can take images which indicate the positions of individual atoms in real space. The main problems en-countered in the design of a STM are those associated with maintain a precise tip-sample position and with thestability of the controlL2_4]. The tip-sample gap is affected mainly by vibrations ,
