Theology of Worship

Abstract

Presbyterian worship is trinitarian and centered around the Word of God. Worship is guided by a directory for worship, and liturgical books are recommended but not required. The form of Presbyterian worship has varied in different times and places, but the proclamation of scripture and the celebration of the two sacraments of baptism and communion have been constants. A part of the Reformed family of churches, Presbyterians first began worshiping in the British Isles in the sixteenth century. When Scots-Irish and English Presbyterians emigrated to America, they soon established a Presbyterian church. Missionary movements took Presbyterian worship to various parts of the globe during the nineteenth century. Although various cultural contexts continue to change the sound and look of Presbyterian worship, the focus remains on proclamation of the Word and celebration of the sacraments.
