Theology and Thriving: Teleological Considerations Based on the Doctrines of Christology and Soteriology

Abstract

Notions of human thriving are abundant in psychological literature. Christian theology provides resources for shaping these notions by emphasizing particular aspects of thriving. The present paper argues for the importance of attending to the God-given telos of humanity as presented in Scripture. This paper investigates how the doctrines of Christology and soteriology can inform conceptions of a human telos and human thriving. Such an investigation emphasizes particular markers of thriving by highlighting some indicators over others and by bringing to light some indicators that may otherwise be missed. Specifically, the doctrine of Christology shapes notions of thriving by emphasizing themes of humble submission, service, and suffering. Likewise, the doctrine of soteriology emphasizes the importance of repentance and conversion, which can also be understood as important for thriving.
