Abstract

The search for political Themistocles has not been rewarding. The nature of testimony makes it too easy to accept one or another of a set of cliches, which have advantage of being immedi ately understood. Thus, Themistocles is seen as a novus homo,1 or a democrat2 or as the great radical.3 The trouble with all these labels is that they give picture of politics in Marathon genera tion a vividness, a sharpness of focus that no one has a right to expect, considering state of our evidence.4 It is my aim in this paper to examine literature of fifth and fourth centuries to determine how
