Abstract
This Theme Issue is dedicated to the memory of Tom Duke, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 48. Tom made lasting contributions to a broad range of topics and was highly regarded for his very elegant approaches that unravel key physical principles underlying the function of biological systems.
