Ed. Note: As codirectors of the LOCAL (Laboratory of Critical Arts and Learning), Mady Schutzman and Jan Cohen-Cruz sponsored Augusto Boal's 199o workshops in New York City. The LOCAL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the process of creating politically conscious art and providing a theoretical and practical forum for multicultural and interdisciplinary expressions. Boal's techniques have been incorporated into the LOCAL's studio training program and subsequently used by participants in various community settings-prisons, elementary schools, senior centers, unions, literacy, and rehabilitation programs.
