Abstract

A newly developed borehole logging gamma-gamma tool based on the application of a quasi zero-activity primary gamma-ray source, has been described. The ZERO PROBE utilizes a 137Cs source with a strength of only 1.1 MBq, which is three orders of magnitude less than the source activities applied in current commercial borehole logging tools. The probe has undergone field trials at a black coal mine in Queensland. The results of these tests have proved the suitability of the ZERO PROBE for deposit delineation and coal ash determination.
