Abstract

The Zapatistas have developed their politics in a specifically Mexican context where transforming the passive political culture and subjectivity of the entrenched system of clientelism has been a central focus. This chapter addresses an aspect of current Zapatista practice and theory: the construction of new social subjects through the exercise of autonomy in the Zapatista communities. It is part of a larger project to explore the distinctive Zapatista combination of the utopian and the strategic, manifest in its history and practice. That larger project addresses as well the explicitly anticapitalist Other Campaign, launched in 2006 as an alternative to the presidential campaign; the rising of the women; the primacy of ethics in the Zapatista vision and practice; and the centrality to Zapatismos political project of parody and poetry in its discourse. Keywords: Mexico; Other Campaign; Zapatista Autonomy
