Abstract

This paper is concerned with a simply supported conical shell loaded at its vertex through a central boss. The shell material is rigid perfectly plastic and is assumed to obey Tresca's yield condition. The complete solutions for exact and simplified yield conditions are constructed by numerical methods. The proper choice of yield condition is predicted by a natural extension of the stress profile on the yield surface and checked locally by the flow rule and overall by boundary conditions. The simplified yield condition in geometric language is one which partly coincides and/or partly circumscribes the exact yield surface. Such simplification is made only in the region of the shell where circumferential membrane force |nθ| becomes large.
