O. ; Branduardi, G. ; Sanford, P. Abstract An observation with the Copernicus X-ray telescopes reveals two kinds of flux variability in 3U 1700-37. Fluctuations on a time scale of 1 hour are energy-independent in the 3.5-10.5 keV range, while changes of intensity with binary phase are caused by a variable absorbing column. It is found that there is relatively more absorbing material in the line of sight following the passage of the X-ray source in front of its companion, but comparison with the light curve of Jones et al. (1973) indicates that this must be a variable phenomenon. The length of eclipse during the present observation was significantly shorter than when observed by Jones et al. (1973).
