Abstract

The authors record the results of the investigation of a series of cases to determine the value of plain radiography in Intestinal Obstruction. Measurement of the distended loops and the number of fluid levels present formed an accurate method of grading the degree of the obstruction. The value of supine films in diagnosing the anatomical site of obstruction in large gut obstruction is emphasised. Radiological diagnosis of the anatomical site of obstruction in large gut obstruction is emphasised. Radiological diagnosis of the absence of obstructions proved equally valuable as the diagnosis of obstruction, and in no case in the authors' series was obstruction, proved to be present when radiological examination had excluded it. Cases, other than obstruction, where fluid levels were found are noted, and the conclusions drawn are discussed. The authors believe that plain X-ray films of the abdomen are indicated in all cases of obstruction providing valuable information which cannot be obtained by clinical means.
