Abstract

AbstractProfessor Neufeldt has recently finished editing The Works of Branwell Bronte published by Garland Press in three volumes. Drawing on this experience, Professor Neufeldt re-assesses the literary achievement of Branwell. Not only was Branwell the first-published of the Bronte children, but his poetry reached a far greater public than that of his sisters. The scale of Branwell's output was prodigious and, contrary to popular misconception, his writing attained considerable maturity and depth. Again, contrary to popular belief, Branwell remained creative and industrious till late in his life. This paper is based on the lecture given at the Service of Remembrance held in Haworth on 24 September to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the death of Bran well Bronte'.
